5 Haircare Myths You’ve Probably Believed

When it comes to taking care of our hair, there’s no shortage of tips and tricks online. But not everything you hear is true, In fact some common “advice” may be doing more harm than good at times. Let’s break down 5 haircare myths you’ve probably heard and what’s actually true.

Myth 1: Washing your hair every day is bad
The truth: It actually depends on your hair type and lifestyle, the country climate can also play a role.
Some people think daily washing strips natural oil and causes dryness. But if you have an oily scalp, sweat often, or live in a humid climate (e.g. Singapore), daily washing can actually keep your scalp clean and healthy. Just be sure to use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that won’t dry out your strands.

Myth 2: Trimming your hair often will makes it grow faster
The truth: Trims don’t affect how fast your hair will grows.
Hair grows from the scalp not the ends. But regular trims (every 6–8 weeks) do help get rid of split ends, which can make your hair look healthier and prevent breakages. So while it doesn’t grow faster, it can look and feel much better.

Myth 3: Conditioner makes your hair fall out
The truth: Conditioner isn’t the cause of hair fall.
Some people notice hair in the shower and blame their conditioner. But this hair had already shed from the scalp it just gets loosened when you apply and rinse your conditioner. In fact, a good conditioner helps keep your hair strong and less prone to breakages.

Myth 4: Brushing your hair 100 times a day makes it shinier
The truth: Overbrushing can cause damage.
Brushing helps spread your natural oils—but too much brushing can lead to breakages and split ends. Use a wide-tooth comb or soft-bristle brush, and be gentle, especially on wet hair.

Myth 5: Natural oils like coconut oil can fix split ends
The truth: Oils can moisturise, but they can’t repair split ends.
Once hair is split, no product can glue it back together. Oils like coconut or argan oil can smooth the appearance and reduce frizz but the only real fix wll be a trim. That’s why regular care and protective products are key to preventing splits in the first place.
